Get Out Those Storage Boxes and Check the Lights

Believe it or not, the Christmas holidays are just around the corner. There’s no time like the present to start thinking about this year’s holiday decorations. Especially if something was broken last season and you promised yourself you’d repair it in time for this season. So open up those holiday storage boxes and pull out the lights. Let’s see if they’re ready to go.

Christmas lights can be the curse of your holiday if you wait until the third week of December to check them. The way most of them are wired means one bad bulb could put the whole string out. That’s when you need to check the entire thing, from one bulb to the next, until you find the offending one. The most annoying thing is to check one hundred bulbs only to find out that the fuse is the real culprit!

Let’s see. What else is in your boxes? There’s the ceramic nativity scene you display on the dining table every year. Take a good look to make sure there are no cracks or broken pieces. In case there are, you can get some white glue and paint at the craft store to fix it up nice. If it’s broken beyond repair you may just have to put out for a new one. But that’s why you’re checking these things early.

The lady of the house may want to give her holiday linens and table ware the once over as long as you’re feeling festive. Hopefully the fragile times were packed away with all due care at the end of last season. Tissue paper and good packing methods mean she’ll unwrap to find everything still intact. That will be a relief. And when all is said and done you’ll know you’re ready for Christmas.

Get Your Kids Interested in DIY with Packing Boxes

DIY home repairs have been all the rage in Europe for the last decade. Prior to that, home repairs were considered a necessary evil that we did because we had to. But now it has become a hobby. For some it’s even a passion. If you’re one of those people who love DIY, how do pass your interest on to your kids? Try getting them involved with packing boxes.

Ellen was a mother of three small children, all of whom loved to be creative. One of her daughters wanted a Victorian doll house, but Ellen and her husband couldn’t afford it. So they collected some old cardboard boxes stored in the basement and set about teaching their daughter how to build one.

They first downloaded some free home design software for the computer. They set it up and unleashed their daughter to design her house just the way she wanted. Reducing the finished product to scale, they printed out plans and set to building it as detailed as possible. Using cardboard, modelling clay, toothpicks, poster paint, magazine pictures, and a host of other items, the two ladies made a masterpiece.

The project was so successful the young girl then took great interest in how her real house was built. She started asking questions and reading books. She offered to help whenever a home repair project came up. She sat endlessly at the computer designing home after home. All because her mother helped her build a doll house from cheap moving boxes.

There’s no guarantee that your child would react the same way, but give it a try. At the very least you’ll end up being able to spend time with the kids while creating a pretty good project. With any luck, it will light a DIY fire.

  • Connections: If the paint has time to dry out between two areas that you paint consecutively, the connection between these two areas will be visible. Moving the roller or brush in the dry zone to zone freshly painted.
  • Paint ceilings: if you use a ladder, you will lose time going up and down and the paint dries, trace connections may appear. Cesspools and Septic tanks

septictankHouses in rural areas are often connected to a cesspool or septic tank because there is no main drainage in the area. Cesspools A cesspool is simply a collecting pit for waste. Most are cylindrical and lined with brick or concrete. The pit needs pumping out regularly. This is done by a waste contractor or the local council. There is usually a charge for the work. The Building Regulations state that a cesspool must have a minimum capacity of 18 cubic metres (4,000 gallons). An old pit smaller than the recommended size may need weekly pumping. Septic tanks A septic tank is a brick-lined pit. Waste in a septic tank decomposes by natural bacterial action. Heavy sludge falls to the bottom of the brick-lined chamber. This leaves clear liquid on top. New waste is discharged into the tank below the clear liquid.

Baffles divide the tank into chambers so that sewage sinks down the tank gradually. This allows time for bacterial action to turn solid waste into sludge. If you have a septic tank, be sparing with lavatory cleaners and other products containing bleach as it can stop the bacterial action. The partly decomposed waste passes out of the tank through a dip-pipe into a filtration tank (usually another chamber filled with gravel or a similar material). From there, the waste filters away into clay drains which allow the liquid to seep slowly into the soil.

Septic tanks need both planning and Building Regulations permission, a site placed and built well away from the house and enough land for the network of drains which leads off from the tank. You cannot run these drains across someone else’s land without permission.
