Choosing the right doors & windows

Ever since primitive man’s first house, there has always been a door to come and go, and a window to let in light and air. Doors and windows are not simply something to open and close. In today’s buildings, they take on independence, but still retain their fundamental purpose.

Thoughtful design of an entry door will make it a major feature of the overall external appearance. If you plan a colonial home, then a colonial-style door adds a touch of authenticity. Internally, if your entry foyer or internal staircase features timber, make sure all doors and surrounds compliment this feature and blend gracefully into your home.

If your home is ultra contemporary, then make sure you choose a complimentary style of doors, both external and internal.

Keep in mind to ensure that your external security doors blend harmoniously with your interior decoration. If using glass doors opening to an outdoor entertainment area make sure they are clearly identifiable as doors. There have been many nasty accidents where people have attempted to walk through a pane of plain glass which they did not see.

Windows need to be as thoughtfully chosen as the doors. They must harmonize with the home and can give a somewhat plain-looking house that shade of distinction.

If you choose timber windows, they can be painted in a wide range of colors — but keep in mind, timber needs regular repainting. Aluminums-framed windows come in both anodized and acrylic finishes and in a variety of colors. Windows come in standard sizes, although you can have something individual that is windows made to your specific measurements. But anything made-to-measure is normally more expensive, so consider whether it is really worthwhile to increase your overall costs.

Windows need to be cleaned. When designing windows, try and ensure they will be accessible for that purpose.

It is wise to think about interior coverings when you are planning the windows and doors. If you intend to have sliding glass doors opening onto a patio, remember it will be best to have coverings that move vertically — either curtains that pull to the side, or louvers, or vertical drapes.

The same applies to windows and their coverings. If they slide from side-to-side, then a blind that pulls up and down may not be suitable. It could simply rattle and get wet if the window is open just the merest crack in wet weather. Your architect or builder can offer a range of expertise in these areas so as to make your doors and windows a very special feature of your home.
